The rightly named belvedere of Mount Sutton

October 7 2012 - the Fall Festival in Sutton is at its highest. Colors are slowly falling down the trees and the air is getting cooler every day. It's been raining all of last week. The sun shyly darts a few rays through the heavily clouded grey sky. We decide to take a chance and go climb the mountain to see what kind of view we have this year. Countless little streams run in the hillside, the slope is muddy and steep to get to the viewpoint next to the Alleghanys trail. We stop there to catch our breath and the view. And what a view! Here it is (click on each picture to enlarge it):

Monarchs of these fields

Comes August and September, the fields of Domaine Tomali-Maniatyn are the hosts of a highly colorful flying circus. Monarchs on their way to Mexico feast on the wild flowers. One sunny Sunday afternoon, I took my Nikon and decided to make a butterfly-paparazzi of myself...

A new site to share the Domaine's point of view... litteraly

The site panorama.maniatyn.com is now online to share the Domaine's point of view, I mean the scenery around it. There are 10 beautiful pictures already, and I'm sure it's only the beginning!

10 gables with a view

Here we are! The decoration of Domaine Tomali-Maniatyn's roof is (almost) completed. We still have a few finishing touches to put here and there, but we are very proud of the results, which goes beyond our best expectations!

Our roof is inspired by those of the Zakopane region, in the Polish Tatras mountains. It is most certainly unique in Quebec and even in Canada.

On the technical side, there are two layers of wood shingles on top of the protective coating, with a small space, allowing the roof to breathe and providing a better insulation. Each shingle is cut in chevron in order to be interlocked with its neighbor on a same row. They are also cut in a long and thin shape so that they closely follow each curve of the roof.

These two overlapping layers of shingles will give a longer life to our roof (we expect between 70 to 100 years, depending on the weather). Once the first layer will have reached the end of its life, in about 35 to 50 years, it will be removed and the second layer will then be painted to take over. But that's enough for the technical side of it...

From a decorative standpoint, this roof is almost like a hand-sewn piece of lace! The last row of shingles goes beyond the rooftop to form a delicate crenelation over the sky. Each gable and each balcony are covered on three sides with shingles that follow the slopes and curves of the roof, in the typical style of Zakopane's mountain lodges.

When your reach Domaine Tomali-Maniatyn (preferably just before sunset, this is the best light), the view is breathtaking: as you ascend the road, you will see the roof as if it was emerging from the grass and flowers like a powerful, yet delicate, ghost ship...

Here are a few pictures telling the story of its construction that started in 2002.

Our "Tropical" Indoor Swimming Pool

Well, we've always thought our indoor swimming pool was enjoying a tropical micro-climate. After all, the cactus and the other plants who live there have been growing at a jungle-like rate since their arrival on the banks of the pool... But you know how it is, we've got used to it: that's something we would only notice looking back at pictures of the pool from last year or two years ago.

But now, since a few weeks, we've been amazed to observe a more vibrant proof that this is indeed a tropical haven: a pineapple is growing up at the feet of the cactus!!! It took a few moments to remember that back in 2006, we had planted there a crown from a pineapple that we had for supper.

The fruit itself is now over a foot tall and is maturing slowly. After some research on the Internet, we believe that Domaine Tomali-Maniatyn's first pineapple harvest will happen sometime in February or March. While we cannot (yet) claim to be a tropical plantation, I'm quite certain, this is the first pineapple to ever grow on the slopes of Mount Sutton, just a few yards away from the (very) snowy ski trails...
